What’s the name of a hardwood flooring that can fit not only a country-styled home, but a traditional-styled one as well?Take a look at Natural Heart Pine flooring. With its warm tones and rich character, it’s the perfect complement to a variety of design
styles, and stands the test of time.
Natural Heart Pine wood is a domestic species, found primarily in the Southeastern United States. In addition to flooring, this wood has been used to make furniture and cabinetry, among other goods. A popular wood over the course of the nation’s history that became largely depleted , much of the available Natural Heart Pine flooring today is recycled or reclaimed.
Natural Heart Pine flooring is full of character. It’s a light-colored wood of a golden hue that can brighten and add warmth to any room. If you wanted to change the color of the wood to something else, it takes to stain quite nicely. Dark knots add to its physical beauty as well, making for a charming rustic appearance. Because of its range of tones, character marks, and history, Natural Heart Pine flooring works great in a variety of interior design styles.
Natural Heart Pine flooring is technically a softwood, which in hardwood flooring speak means it comes from trees that produce seeds without coverings. This doesn’t have anything to do with the hardiness of the wood. While hardwoods are typically more dense than softwoods, it’s not always the case. For instance, at Hardwoods4less, Natural Heart Pine flooring has between 10 to 30 percent heart pine and is quite the sturdy wood. Compared to the industry standard Red Oak, which has a Janka Hardness Scale score of 1290, Natural Heart Pine has a score of 870. Nonetheless, with the addition of a durable top coat, it’s a wood that can stand up to everyday wear and tear -- any scratches, dings or dents just add to the character.
If you’re looking for a flooring type that can fit your traditional or country-styled home, Natural Heart Pine’s one to consider. It’s a historical beauty, full of character and strength, a great match for any space

Q: I have a friend who had Natural Heart Pine flooring in an old home of hers. It looked really nice, except for the cracks -- she had a lot of cracks in her flooring. Is
that something to expect from this wood?
A: With the changes in temperature and heat that come with the changing of the seasons, hardwood floorings do experience a bit of expansion and contraction. As such, if they were not properly acclimated before installation, you can have major cracking. If it’s slight cracking however, that, coupled with the tone of the wood and the knots throughout, just adds to the charm.
With the expansion and contraction of the wood that occurs season to season, and at different rates for the knots and surrounding wood respectively, minor cracking may take place. The knots and the slight cracking, however, are part of what makes up the species’ charm. If you do not like the look of these natural imperfections, you may want to consider purchasing a different hardwood flooring that is more aligned with your taste.
